 HELP! cough/metastatic cancer/fear

I am aware that a persistant cough generally has a fairly tame cause.
Before I explain my persistant cough, understand that:
        1) I have had melanoma twice (each erradicated by resection)
        2) I have had Hodgkin's disease
        3) Both cancers were within the last 3 years
        4) I lost my mother to melanoma and my father to myeloma.
        5) I am a 32 year old graduate student
Other than this chronic cough, and history, I am very healthy. Untill five
weeks ago I was running 5 miles a day. (Overcompensating for my history)
        Anyhow, the cough....
About 4 or 5 times a day I have horrible coughing fits. I cant breath.
and generally feal like I am going to collapse when the occur. Recently, as
of the last week I have taken to almost regurgetating during the cough. The
cough is non productive (no phlem). No other syptoms.
I have a tremendous fear about going to the doctor. I know it
is irrational. Any advice.......
                                Please......

                                Thank you

Well, usually melanoma grows too slowly to give you onset of symptoms
this fast.  Hodgkins can, but is often curable in fairly advanced
stages.  Still, the longer you wait, the worse the chances are.

You know what we're going to tell you.  You need a chest X-ray and a
chest CT.  It might be your worst fear, but even if it is, you're
hardly doomed.  Not by a long shot.  Or it might be something
unrelated, like TB or fibrosis from chemo or who knows what.  Take a
load off your mind and just do it.
