 Heavy Traffic Jogging, Pt. II

Like cigarette smoking, ozone effects build over time, with
common symptoms: reduced lung power and stiffening and
inflammation of the lungs.

DR.  MICHAEL K.  SCHONBRUN,  CHAIRMAN OF THE AIR QUALITY
COUNCIL AND PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL JEWISH CENTER FOR
IMMUNOLOGY AND RESPIRATORY MEDICINE IN DENVER: "People are
starting to recognize that our air quality problems are really
bad. The metropolitan Denver area has a death rate from asthma,
emphysema,  and other chronic obstructive lung diseases that is
30 percent worse than the national norm and in the worse 10
percent in the country. Experts determined last summer that air
pollution could well be the leading cause."

In Southern California,  even athletes in top condition have
trouble breathing while working out during a first-stage smog
alert,  THE LOWEST ALERT ON THE SCALE. DR. HENRY GONG of
UCLA'S SCHOOL OF MEDICINE,  in a study of the effects of air
pollutants on lung function,  found that ozone significantly
burdens the lungs of elite athletes. "And these are the
competitive athletes who go for the gold,  the prize money,"

Ozone levels are highest during rush hour traffic periods.
Workouts should be scheduled around these times. High ozone
levels,  and air pollution levels in general,  can make the
trachea muscles contract (causing coughing and breathing
difficulties), and increase sensitivity to other irritants,
giving the effects of asthma to non-asthmatics. High levels
also cause inflammation of the airways and lungs.

Also,  when you aren't exercising,  you breathe through your
nose---an excellent filter. When you run,  you tend to breathe
through your mouth,  bypassing the filtering effects.
