 Spider bites and children
My 22 month old daughter is getting bitten up by spider bites. The doctor says that it's a common brown spider and that it is prevalent right now. We live in El Segundo (Los Angeles county). Melissa seems to be allergic, because she is getting very large bite sores. There is a bite mark in the middle, which is red and a lighter red mark that circles out from the middle. One is even the size of a tennis ball. I was advised to check for red streaks that may run up her leg, and for difficulty in breathing. She seems to get bitten when she lies on the floor at day care, while sleeping. I have told the day care provider to please put her in a crib, and get her up off the floor, when she takes a nap. Has anyone else had this problem with spider bites? How BIG are these spiders? Will Melissa's reaction get worse and worse after each bite incident? Sandy

I have this problem with spider bites. It was the bane of my childhood because every summer I got sent home from camp with my eyes swollen shut, my lips swollen to grandiose proportions, and needing hospital intervention to help me breathe. I am also allergic to every other type of insect bite, such as fleas, mosquitos, etc. With the spider bites I learned as an {*filter*} to ALWAYS put on insect repellent before I go to bed. Since I am pregnant, I can't do this, and of course I have had 2 spider bites this week, both in my right arm which is now swollen, and to make matters worse, Mrs Spider laid her eggs in my bedroom and the other night there were about 50 baby spiders rappelling off my ceiling. I got out the vacuum and sucked them up! It felt great. I don't think there is anything you can do to prevent spider bites save use repellant, mosquito netting, and learn the quickest route to the emergency room.

I don't mean for this to ba an ad, but I can't help but want others to know of the benefits of Skin So Soft Bath Oil by AVON. (yes, I sell it, E-mail me if you're interested) It is very well known throughout the military as an excellent bug repellant, especially for mosquitoes. If you don't like the oil idea, there's lotion, shower gel, and a moisturizing stick(looks like a solid deodorant stick, but moisturizes instead). All work Ellie Blackwell

 Spider bites and children
A friend's child has a large reddish swelling in his second finger extending from the fingernail to the second knuckle. He's seen a few Kaiser doctors and had a biopsy which found no cause for the problem. This may not be related, but the swelling began around the time he got a few flea bites from a neighbor's pet dog. He's going to see a supposed specialist recommended by Kaiser next week. Does anyone have any suggestions as to perhaps obscure conditions that should be considered? Thanks in advance. -- David Scheim

I've got 2 cats who are both good hunters. Unfortunately, one is known as the eradicator since he kills every bird, squirrel, and mouse that dares to step onto our property. With such a bounty, who needs spiders. The other cat is big on crunchy beetle type bugs, but not all that interested in spiders. So, its repellant for me! Worthless pets...but so adorable!

To get rid of spiders and roaches, don't use a cat -- instead, release some house geckos in your house or wherever. That's a kind of lizard that is very secretive (you can have quite a few and rarely see them). Even one gecko loose in the house virtually rids it of insects. Please make sure you do not already have a cat--my cats adore to play with/ spear on a claw/chew on geckos and other lizards. When the geckos come to the windowscreens at night, the cats cry because they want to play with the geckos. I have rescued more than one gecko from my cat, and found others dead. Cats may eschew roaches (mine don't) but they certainly will love a gecko. -- Amy Moseley Rupp Needed: one witty, appropriate,

Ah, you need bigger geckos, then. Tokay geckos, for instance. Almost as big as the cat... :) -- ==========================================================================

A bar I used to frequent in NYC had Tokays. They'd crawl out from behind the bottles about 3 am, and at least one drunk swore off the sauce when he saw them for the first time. -- Mark A. Fulk University of Rochester

 Spider bites and children
Down in Southern California, there is a brown spider called a "Brown Recluse Spider", which can inflict very {*filter*} bites on the victim (I was one of these victims several years ago). This might be what is getting your daughter. You may want to get an "Ana-Kit" or "Epi-Pen". This is injectible epinephrine that is by prescription only. It is helpful in the event of a reaction where the person is having trouble breathing. Talk to your MD about it. Renee Roberts "I am not a doctor".
