 Hyper thyroid and eyes

I saw an optomotrist who told me the reaon I have 20/35 vision is
because my eyes are slightly larger than they should be, causing
the focal point to fall before the retina.

A friend of mine had a thyroid problem a few years ago where he
was extremely and dangerously hyper thyroid. His eyes were so
swollen, they looked like they were going to pop out of his head.

I am ever so slightly hyper thyroid. Could this be causing my
vision to be worse than 20/20?

-------All your optomotrist means is that you are slightly near-sighted.

-------From your description, your friend likely had Grave's Disease,
which has hyperthyroidism as its major manifestation.  Another characteristic
is exophthalmos (protrusion of eyeballs), caused by increased tissue
accumulation behind the eyes and infiltration of extraocular muscles
by white cells (lymphocytes). The cause of this ophthalmopathy is not
clear but is autoimmune in nature.

According to the evening news reports, Barbara Bush was recently treated for this problem.

 I doubt it.

You didn't say what is the cause of your hyperthyroidism.....
there are other causes besides Grave's Disease.  For your own
reassurance, mention your concerns next time you see your internist
/endocrinologist.

Protruding eyes associated with hyperthyroidism (which your friend apparently
had) and elongated eyes - usually associated with myopia (nearsightedness) are
not the same.  While the thyroid may have soemthing to do with ocular growth -
your problem seems to be myopia.
