 vertigo

I was wondering if anybody would know what the cause of the following problem:

I have a friend who when he lays down starts to feel like he is rocking on a
ship or like the room is moving like the wash cycle on a clothes cycle. I told
him it was inter-ear and since he has frequent ear infections it sound like a
good hypothesis....Anyone have any comments and/or suggestion please tell me
about this problem through this echo....
