Well, first of all, a sleeping pill is not supposed to act like an anesthetic;
it's not supposed to render you unconscious! It's supposed to help you
fall sleep. But if you're not in bed with nothing else to do, a sedative
might not put you to sleep.
The recommended hypnotic dose of chl{*filter*}hydrate is 1 gram. However,
there have been studies which have indicated that this is frequently
inadequate. Some people might require as much as 2 grams, which is
also the maximum recommended daily dose in {*filter*}s. But I suspect
that most doctors at that point would use a different sedative (perhaps
one of the benzodiazepines) rather than chl{*filter*}at such a high dose.
