Cyclothymia

 Cyclothymia

What can you tell me specifically about treatment, i.e. medication, therapy,
etc. for cyclothymia.  I understand it is the cyclying of mood disorders from
hypomania to depression on a regular basis.  All I have been able to find in
the Index medicus listings of journal articles relates to either manic episodes
or depression, but not how therapy works to even out the swings from one to the
other.  I am writing a paper on this so I need reference type information.
I would appreciate some HELP soon (like in a couple of  days),
thanks.

Interestingly, carbamazepine (Tegretol) is now being used to treat
this.  Carbamazepine is mainly an anticonvulsant for some seizure
disorders and an analgesic for some neuralgias.  Chemically, it is
structurally similar to the tricyclic antidepressants and one part of
the molecule is suggestive of the barbiturates, which are depressants.
My experience with it is that its side-effects on mood are precisely
what would be useful as a treatment for manic-depressive affective
disorder, i.e. it flattens both the highs and lows.
