 CATS CARRY AIDS - WHAT?

You may have misunderstood the broadcast, David, or more likely, the producers
of the broadcast misunderstood the scientific information they obtained.  Cats
can get AIDS, but not from the same virus that causes AIDS in humans (HIV);
cats get the disease from a different virus called, not surprisingly, Feline
Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). This news is not all that earth-shattering:
There also exist a bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV) that causes AIDS in
cattle, simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) which causes AIDS in apes (and is
very similar to HIV-2, the virus which is the pre{*filter*} cause of human AIDS
in West Africa), and there's also a virus that causes AIDS in mice.  All these
viruses are somewhat related to each other genetically, but all are distinct
viruses.

        As far as I know, there has not been identified a virus related
to HIV that has been identified in rodents.  There are dozens of retroviruses
in rodents that have as one effect of infection, immunosuppression, but
the biology is different.  HIV is classified lentivirinae in retroviridae,
the others are classified oncovirinae in retroviridae, and I find it
quite interesting that nobody has ever discovered a human oncovirus (that
is to say, a human RNA tumor virus -- the few human viruses associated
with tumors are all DNA viruses)
