Well, I'm not a PT (yet), but I can respond on this one! If you live in
{*filter*}ia, the Medical College of {*filter*}ia (VCU) has a really well-respected
MS program. When I was applying, the PT's I talked to recommended this
program highly and they recommended it over ODU's. The only drawback to
MCV is that it is a 3-year program (that might not be a drawback to you,
but for me it was a consideration).

I applied to Duke, Univ. of Delaware, and ODU Masters programs. ODU was
supposed to be my "safe" school. Duke and Delaware are considered to be
top-notch programs, while ODU was considered "just ok" by some of the PTs
I talked to. Well, I got into Duke and Delaware (I'll be attending Duke this
fall) and got rejected from ODU. Go figure!!

ODU doesn't seem to have their act together in some ways. When I first asked
for an application, I never received one. I called and left three messages
about an application and in the next month, I received 12 applications for
the graduate school and two undergraduate applications. Last week, even though
I was rejected, I received financial aid forms that told me that my award
would be forfeited if I didn't respond within 30 days. What award???!!

Getting into PT school is very tough. At Duke, there were 450 applicants for
28 slots, and at Delaware, there were 500 applicants for 32 slots. If you
are a {*filter*}ia resident, you'll have a better chance at MCV or ODU (I heard
that there were 700 applicants at ODU for 50 slots, but don't quote me on
that one). My advice to you is to apply to a lot of schools, get lots of
experience in the field, and be prepared to be persistent. A lot of
folks have to apply for two years before they get in.

Good luck!

Meryl Freeman
