Hyppocratic Oath: what is a 'pessary'?

Actually, in Hippocrates's day, a pessary was a rock inserted into
female beasts of burden so as to prevent pregnancy and to disturb
the reproductive tract enough to induce {*filter*} in the event of
pregnancy.

: I saw a piece of the Hyppocratic Oath quoted in a paper.  It said that
: "I shall not give any woman a pessary to induce {*filter*}", or
: something like that.

: 1)  What is a pessary?  How does it work?  Why would it induce
: {*filter*}?

: [I looked up the word pessary in a dictionary, which simply said that
: it is a {*filter*}l suppository]

: 2)  Was this part of the Hyppocratic Oath recinded in any way when
: {*filter*}s became legal?

: Email replies perferred.
