Tinnitus/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

 Tinnitus/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

I've been diagnosed with having tinnitus and chronic fatigue syndrome.
In fact, the former may be a possible symptom of the latter. My doctor
says that since it is a viral disease in my ear tissue, there is
really nothing I can do.

Can anyone verify or refute this? Also, are there any studies that have
proven a link between vitamin C and eliminating/alleviating CFS?

Neither tinnitus nor CFS are caused by a viral infection of ear tissue,
and at least the CFS is treatable.  Vitamin C has no proven benefit.
You need to see a physician with expertise in diagnosing and treating
CFS.  This is most likely to be an infectious disease expert.

It's true that there is no cure for CFS.  However, treating the sleep
disorder that goes along with it often brings significant improvement.
Sedating anti-depressants such as amitryptiline and doxepin, along with
non-tricyclics like Trazodone, are usually used for this.  Flexeril
may help muscle pain in those CFS people who fit the fibromyalgia
criteria as well.

Low-dose amitriptyline or a similar medication to improve the quality of
stage 4 sleep, maintainence of a regular schedule of sufficient sleep,
and daily low impact aerobic exercise.  For further information about
chronic fatigue syndrome and the closely related fibromyalgia:

To join the FIBROM-L list and get the FAQ, send the following message:

The CFS-L list is similarly available at LIST.NIH.GOV or NIHLIST and is
mirrored on alt.med.cfs.  To get a list of available files on CFS, send
the command GET CFS-FILE FILELIST as an Internet e-mail message to

from cu.nih.gov in directory /cfs.

Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) is nothing more than a sedating tricyclic
antidepressant which was approved and marketed as a "muscle relaxant";
it's a close chemical and pharmacological relative of amitryptiline.
Its primary benefit in treating lower back pain comes from the fact
that it's completely abuse-proof, unlike, say, meprobamate and
Valium--it couldn't be due to any greater efficacy.  It might be useful
in conditions which respond to amitryptiline.
