pH fluctuation is normal in the reef aquarium. It is at its lowest after
the lighting has been off, typically in the AM and highest during the
peak / end of the daily lighting cycle PM. Yes, calcium hydroxide,
a.k.a.: limewater, a.k.a.: Kalkwasser, will definitely boost and
maintain calcium levels AND pH. Properly mixed limewater has an
approximate pH value between 10 and 14. Properly mixed = 3 tablespoons
to 5 gall of RO/DI tapwater mixed with a small power head for aprox 4 to
6 hours then let the undisolved sediment settle to the bottom for 4 to 6
hours then add the upper mixed solution...SLOWLY as a drip or with a
dosing pump.IMO all water used for makeup/evaporation should be
administered this way. A desirable pH reading at the end of the
day/lighting cycle is between 8.2 to 8.4. Maintaining an elevated pH
hinders the growth of undesirable micro algae and adding calcium
hydroxide encourages the growth of desirable pink purple coraline algae.
The test kit I use is the Reef Status Calcium by Seachem

Hope this helps.
