To film the four-hour kudu chase scene in The Great Dance, we followed Karoha,
the hunter, in a Land Cruiser. We had an American ex-Olympic rower with us, Teo
Bieleveld, who was extremely fit and strong. Every time we got stuck, Teo would
jump out of the vehicle and follow Karoha with a small camera. We got stuck
often; there were no roads. Once Craig and I had freed the vehicle, we would
catch up with Teo, who would be exhausted, and carry on after Karoha. Karoha ran
the whole day without a sip of water.

Feeding the fire: the lost history and uncertain future of mankind's energy ...
 By Mark E. Eberhart

just as Karoha in The Great Dance was able to run four relentless
hours, chasing a herd of kudu.

Kudu can run at over 80 kph (50 mph) for several minutes, easily
outrunning a hunting lion. But after these bursts of speed, their
bodies must cool, which on a hot day can take many minutes. On the
other hand, an extraordinary human runner can sustain speeds of
20 to 25 kph (12 to 15 mph) for many hours, as recorded in the
astonishing scene in Foster's film....In the end, an exhausted and
bewildered kudu stood, unmoving, as Karoha delivered repeated spear
thrusts to its vital organs."
